On Friday night, the Las Vegas Aces completed the sweep of the Phoenix Mercury to win their 3rd title. The Mercury went into game four locked in on winning their first game in the final; there was no way they could get swept at home in front of their own fanbase. This task became more out of reach with their star player, Sauto Sabally, out with a concussion. The Mercury struggled to make up for the lost production, and things went from bad to worse when their head coach, Nate Tibbetts, got ejected in the third quarter after receiving a double technical foul after getting into the face of a ref. Down by more than 20 points, the Mercury spent the rest of the time trying to catch up, which soon proved to be unsustainable as the Aces pulled away towards the end. With a 97-86 win, the Aces completed the sweep. Not only have the Aces cemented their place in the WNBA history books, but they are the first team to go from a .500 record halfway through the season to winning a Championship. The last team that had a similar path was swept in the final. For A’Ja Wilson, this was one of the best years ever. She became the first player in WNBA history to win DPOY, MVP, Finals MVP, and the first player to score 300 points in the playoffs. A year in which she became a 4x MVP and a 3x WNBA champion, A’Ja Wilson put herself in the conversation for the Greatest of All Time discussion, also known as G.O.A.T.. What also speaks volumes is Aces’ head coach Becky Hammon being able to coach her team to three Championships in her first four years since being hired back in 2021. Who knows what else is in store for the Aces franchise? With a strong coaching and player connection, the Aces could join the teams with four titles or even pass them and win five titles. Only time will tell, but for now, the Aces have created their own dynasty.
