A Special Weekend in the WNBA
Maya Moore Jersey Retirement
This past weekend was the jersey retirement of legendary Minnesota Lynx player Maya Moore. Those who have been following the WNBA for a while know just how amazing of a player she was but just in case you’re new here let us give you a quick update on how her career went. The Lynx drafted Maya Moore in the 2011 WNBA draft from Uconn where she had just won two national championships. Maya Moore along with a team full of other stars went on to win 4 WNBA championships. Maya Moore was a 6x All-Star, 3x All-Star MVP, 2x Olympic Gold medalist, WNBA MVP, and 2011 rookie of the year. With those stats, it was obvious that this was no normal jersey retirement. The Lynx had a full post-game retirement show for Maya who announced her official retirement in January 2023 on Good Morning America. Saturday night she was joined by her teammates who helped her win all those trophies.

Former players talked about their favorite memories and told some funny stories about Maya proving that she had a chill side outside the dominant competitive athlete everyone saw night in and night out. The Lynx gifted Maya a custom jacket showing all her accolades and custom shoes, one for each WNBA championship but nothing was better than everyone watching the Lynx lift that number 23 jersey high up into the rafters. Maya said on the night, "I am so excited to be able to come back to connect, celebrate, and remember so many of the special memories I was able to be a part of with this Lynx family”. To make the night better the Lynx beat the Fever 90-80 capping off a wonderful night for a legendary player.

In the game of the week, the Connecticut Suns just needed a win to secure their spot in the playoffs but they would have to get that win against the number-one team in the league the New York Liberty. It was a top-two matchup in the Eastern Conference in what could very well be the Eastern Conference final this year. The Suns started the game strong at times creating a 10-point lead. In the end, it became a much closer game with the Liberty catching up, but in the end, the Suns were able to lock in and win the game 72-64 clinching their spot in the playoffs and snapping the Liberty’s 8-game win streak. In the Western Conference, the Lynx were battling against the Aces in a match-up that has been a tough one this season. Naphessa Collier continued her amazing scoring season, with 27 points to help the Lynx move past the Aces and clinch their spot in the playoffs as the number one seed in the west. While teams were securing their playoff spots Angel Reese was setting more records and adding to her Rookie of the Year campaign. In Sunday’s loss against the Las Vegas Aces, Angel Reese tied Tina Charles for the most double-doubles set by a rookie in one season with 22. With only 11 games left, She will likely set the record. With the stat-line of 12 points and 22 rebounds, Angel also gives her the WNBA record with 3-straight games with 20 rebounds or more.
