The WNBA 2024 regular season has come to a close, and what a season it has been! This season opened up with one of the best rookie classes, with elite players like Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, and Rickea Jackson setting new records almost every other week. The Liberty and Lynx have taken spots 1 and 2 in the league, having a dominant season bringing back the old memories from when both teams were dominant. The Lynx retired legendary player Mya Moore’s jersey, hanging it up in the rafters of Target Center Arena to be glorified forever. The Las Vegas Aces started the season with a rough start to getting a 3-peat, but they have found their grove thanks to their star player, A’ja Wilson. A’ja Wilson has had a monstrous season, she has averaged double-digit points this whole season and has set the all-time regular season scoring record, hitting 1000 points. This accomplishment is something only great players can manage, and for her to do this in one regular season, which means no extra playoff games, is saying a lot. As the season comes to a close, there should be no doubt that A’ja Wilson should win her 3rd MVP award, but this time, it should be unanimous. Going into the playoffs here is how the final standings look;
NY Liberty
Minnesota Lynx
Connecticut Suns
LV Aces
Seattle Storm
Indiana Fever
Phoenix Mercury
3-way tie between Washington, Chicago, and Atlanta
For the Fever this is their first time back in the playoffs since 2016 adding volume to the impact Caitlin Clark had on the team seemingly being the missing piece to bring it all together. There are plenty more stories and players that made this season one of the best but that would need a whole post of its own. But just because the season is coming to an end it does not mean that the chaos and record-setting plays are over, the playoffs are sure to be one for the books with the top teams of old coming back into their stride, new blood rookies having their say, and Las Vegas going for a 3-peat it is going to be a crazy month.
NWSL Intense Weekend
This weekend was stacked with great games. So many games were close and nail-biting to the end. Started the weekend with a battle between Orlando and KC, not only was this a battle of one vs two, but the top two scores in the league played on each team, Temwa Chawinga for KC and Barbra Banda for Orlando. Although the game had reasonable hype, these two high-scoring teams canceled each other out, leaving the field with a 0-0 scoreline and 1 point each. The San Diego Wave had their first game since Alex Morgans's retirement from soccer, and they came out with a bang. Scoring the fastest goal in club history at just 27 seconds into the match by forward Amirah Ali. The wave would go on to beat Utah 2-1, getting their first win post-Alex Morgan. Up north, a showdown between two of the triple espressos, Sophia Smith Vs. Mallory Swanson. The two battled and helped their teams as much as they could, but for Smith, it just wasn’t enough as Chicago pulled away with the 2-0 win. Even though it was a rough night for Smith, Swanson also had a rough night after sustaining a shoulder injury and having to be subbed off. Going into Sunday the Washington Spirit, hands down, had the best game of the day, Trinity Rodman has been on fire since the Olympics. She continued to show her skills in Sunday’s game against the Houston Dash she had a banger solo goal. She fought off a defender to rip a shot upper 90 from the top of the eighteen-yard box. She celebrated by reenacting Steph Curry’s “night night” pose, but she took it a step further by actually laying on the ground in a napping pose. The game was a great win and the perfect way to highlight a stacked weekend of Soccer. The NWSL season only has another month to go and the standings are always changing.
