This Sunday was game 1 of the WNBA semifinals with the LV Aces playing the Fever and the Minnesota Lynx against the Phoenix Mercury. In the first round, we saw an early exit from two teams that were favored going into the playoffs. The Atlanta Dream were the number 3 seed and lost the series at home to the highly injured Indiana Fever. The other highlight was the early exit of the defending champs in a 4 vs 5 match-up against Phoenix. The Liberty went cold in game three and were unable to keep their hopes alive for a chance at a back-to-back championship run. Sunday’s games started with the Aces playing the Fever. Even though the Aces played at home, there was no advantage for them as Fever’s Kelsey Mitchell went off for 34 points, leading her team to a 89-73 win. The second game was between the rested Minnesota Lynx, coming off a first-round sweep of the Valkery, against the tired legs of the Phoenix Mercury. For the Mercury, it was a quick turnaround from their elimination game against the Liberty on Friday to playing the No.1 seed Lynx. The Lynx used their rest to their advantage and took over the game. The Lynx Makayla McBride and Courtney Williams combined for 44 points to give them the 82-69 win and the 1-0 series lead. Tune in to ESPN this Tuesday to see game two of the semifinals.

On Sunday Morning, the WNBA announced this year’s league MVP. The whole season, four players were in MVP talks: Kelsey Mitchell, Alyssa Thomas, A’Ja Wilson, and Napheesa Collier. All four had the stats to make their case, but the race narrowed down to Napheesa Collier and A’Ja Wilson. In the end, it was LV Aces star A’Ja Wilson who came through and won 51 out of the 72 votes for first place. With that win, A’Ja Wilson stands alone in league history as the only player to win four MVP trophies. She is only 29 years old and continues to fill up her trophy case. Will she be able to lead the Aces to their third WNBA Championship? Stay tuned for next week’s update.
